July Edition: Why Wellness and Sexual Health Screening Should Be Non-Negotiable

In Kenya, many health risks remain hidden until it’s too late.

Take female genital schistosomiasis, for example, a neglected disease that affects millions of women and girls, often misdiagnosed as a sexually transmitted infection (STI). A recent screening initiative in Western and Coastal Kenya found that 11% of women tested positive for this condition, which can cause chronic pain, organ damage, and infertility if left untreated.

We spoke with Dr. Beryl, Health Centre Manager (HCM) and resident doctor at AAR Healthcare’s Karen Outpatient Centre, on why preventive health should be a priority. Here’s what she had to say: –

Q: Tell us about your role at AAR Healthcare and how it contributes to promoting preventive health.

At AAR Healthcare, I serve as the HCM and resident doctor at the Karen Outpatient Centre. My role involves overseeing daily operations, supporting clinical teams, and providing direct patient care.

A key focus of our work is promoting primary healthcare through preventive measures. This includes integrating health education into every consultation and encouraging routine wellness checks. These efforts help clients make informed decisions about their health and support early detection of potential conditions

Q: This month, we’re shining a spotlight on wellness and sexual health. Why are these areas so essential to overall well-being?

It’s often said, “When health is compromised, it becomes the only problem that truly matters.”

Wellness isn’t just about the absence of disease – it’s about thriving, physically, mentally, and emotionally. When people prioritize their wellness, they’re more likely to make healthy lifestyle choices.

Sexual health is an essential part of overall wellbeing. It involves not just reproductive health, but also self-esteem, mental health, and the prevention of STIs and certain cancers. Routine care in this area helps reduce stigma and supports early detection and healthier relationships.

Q: Many people only seek medical help when they feel unwell. Why is it important to take a proactive approach?

Many health conditions – including STIs, certain cancers, and chronic illnesses- develop silently in their early stages. Regular wellness and sexual health screenings support early detection, leading to timely intervention and better outcomes.

Proactive care helps individuals manage risk factors, make informed health decisions, and reduce long-term healthcare costs.

Q: Sexual health can still feel like a sensitive topic. How does AAR ensure these services are private, comfortable, and accessible?

At AAR Healthcare, patient privacy and confidentiality are a core part of how services are delivered, including in sexual health care. Consultations are conducted with professionalism, empathy, and discretion to create a safe and supportive environment where clients can speak openly.

The goal is to ensure these services remain private, comfortable, and easily accessible to all.

Q: In your experience, what are some of the most common health risks that could be caught early through these screening packages?

Most STIs, chronic conditions, and lifestyle diseases can be detected early through wellness and sexual health screenings.

These checks help us catch issues before they become serious, allowing for early management and better outcomes.

Q: What advice would you give to someone who feels nervous about getting a sexual health screening?

Early detection is always better than treating advanced conditions. Screenings are quick, confidential, and designed to protect your health – not to judge you.

So, ask yourself: What’s the worst that could happen if you get screened? Almost always, the outcome of taking action is better than doing nothing.

Take the step. Prioritize your health. You owe it to yourself.

Q: For busy urban professionals juggling work and life, what simple steps can they take to stay on top of their health?

Your health should be a top priority, but I understand that’s easier said than done.

That’s why AAR Healthcare has developed services that support proactive care without disrupting daily routines.

Clients can access quick, efficient in-person consultations with minimal waiting times or use Dial-A-Doc – a telemedicine service that one can – consult a doctor, get labs done at your location, review results virtually, and even have medications delivered.
